The Toronto Zoo 10km Race Recap

Happy Monday!!!! I actually feel pretty energized for a Monday... usually I am tired and dragging my butt all day at work but I had a bit more of a bounce in my step today. This past weekend Sarah from My (Mostly) Healthy Life and I ran the Toronto Zoo 10km. I went into this race with zero expectations, I hadn't run 10km since May (and it was a painful 10km) so my goal was to complete this particular race without any hip pain. Leading up to the race my longest run was 8.5 km so I didn't enter this race to get a PB.

This 10km course has a reputation for being a little tough, in fact I know a few people who ran it a couple of times, had terrible runs and then never did it again. It is a hilly 10km with winding narrow paths, and on this particular day it was raining. Sarah and I were running a little behind schedule so we hopped in at the back of the pack.... I think this was our first mistake, we should have been in the blue corral running with people aiming to finish in under an hour.

We started the race at a great pace! According to my Nike Run App we were running under 10 min miles, I felt strong and confident running for the first time since I first injured my hip.... I felt like I was having the run of my life! However, when we hit the 5km mark I noticed we were at the 30 min mark, which I found surprising since Sarah and I both run 5km in under 30 min usually. The hills were really slowing down our pace. Regardless we kept moving along!

By kilometer 8 the hills and lack of training began to take its toll and our pace slowed down to 10:14 min miles, the lack of speed didn't get me down though! I was happy to find that although my run was slower than usual, it was comfortable and I was not experiencing any hip pain other than a slight twinge here and there.

here we are on our way to the finish
What makes this race so unique is that we get to run it through the world famous Toronto Zoo, so the hilly and winding paths we run are actually quite scenic! We so saw lots of different animals and even heard the wolves howling as we ran.  We also decided to rock our new paleo inspired socks that we purchased from The Sox Box. Sarah wore her Steak & Eggs socks and I wore my Hunter Gatherer socks! They got a lot of attention!

our awesome Sox Box Socks!

This race ended up being my slowest 10km ever! Normally I would be disappointed with my performance, however the goal was to run the race and not experience any pain, so mission accomplished! I am hoping that if I continue to train and increase my mileage slowly, I "may" be able to run another half marathon in the new year.
Finally done our long 10km race

Would I do this race again?? My answer is NO. This race was fun, but it was expensive ($80) which I think is a lot for a 10km race. We did receive a race shirt and medal, but other than that our race kit was pretty weak, it was just filled with a bunch of race flyers and a juice box. The end of the course was VERY disorganized, we literally had to dodge our way through the 5km races in order to get back to the parking lot. On the bright side we got to go for a walk through the zoo!

our race swag!

Questions:

1) Tell me about the WORST race you have ever run. Why was it such a bad experience ?

2) What is the most you will pay to enter a race? What influences this?

  2. The worst race I ever won was only a 5k race. I stupidly got drunk the night before a race and isisted on going anyways. I was a heavy smoker than too, and mix that with chain smoking while drinking. Let's just say that I felt like crap that race and ran my fastest because I wanted to get it over with. On top of that, I got a PR because I wanted the race to be done already.

The most I have paid for a race was $75. I haven't ran it yet, it's in April. I have pre-paid and its hurting my pocket but this will be the longest race I've ever ran, and I'm super excited about it.

  4. I would love to run through a zoo and look at all of the animals. That would be a super neat experience. The worst race I have ever run in terms of being disorganized was my 5k yesterday....ugh. :/

  5. I ran this race last year and I actually liked it! It definitely wasn't a PR for me though. I can't believe it was $80! Was the for late entries?

    1. we signed up in August for the sept race, would have been cheaper if we signed up earlier. I didn't hate the race, just wouldn't pay that money again to run it. maybe if i sign up early next year! :)

  6. What an interesting run, I'm happy you had no pain but bummer on dodging through the race traffic! I hate when things are unorganized, it makes me want to run the events for them haha. Best of luck on working on your mileage!

  7. You look adorable in your Sweat Pink gear!! Love it! Sounds like a really interesting race through the zoo, but hilly. Those are killers so don't worry about it. Glad you aren't having any pain!

  8. I did this race this year as well and it was my very first 10k. I was extremely unprepared and had never run more than 5k on a given occasion, so finishing in 1:15 was good for me, LOL.

I did it with my mom and aunt (I'm 16) and loved it because of the animals and support through the whole race. I'm also a little bit happy this was my first 10k because a lot of people said it was pretty difficult (basically the whole last 2k were uphill...blegh!!).

    Glad you enjoyed it :)
